Art lecture: The role of color in European art

Sunday, 2 June 2024 1:00 PM

The lecture will be given by art critic, lecturer at the University of Sydney Ekaterina Heath

Artists invented the first pigments 40,000 years ago, creating a basic palette of five colors: red, yellow, brown, black and white. Since then, the history of color has been one of continuous discovery, whether through exploration or scientific advancement. The invention of new pigments accompanied the development of the greatest movements in art history - from the Renaissance to Expressionism.
Few things give a work of art more life than its color—or lack thereof.
Color was a tool that artists used to depict the world as they saw it. In this lecture, I will discuss how the meaning of color has evolved and changed over time so that each artist can convey their thoughts and feelings much more accurately.
Lectures at the Russian Club and excursions to the NSW Art Gallery by the remarkable professional Ekaterina Heath always arouse great interest,
