"Kalmyks in the art of the eighteenth-early nineteenth century".
Fedor Kalmyk, selfportret, 1798

In this lecture, we will examine the complex relationship between the Kalmyks and the Russian and Chinese empires. Through the prism of images portraying individual representatives, we will gain valuable insights into the perspectives of these nations. Emphasizing their multinational composition, both empires sought to convey their wealth and stability. Additionally, we will explore the viewpoint of the Kalmyks themselves, including their artists and patrons of art. By understanding their outlook, we can grasp how ordinary people experienced the growth of the Russian Empire,  especially as they grappled with assimilation and changes in their faith.
